🚇 What Is the NAVEGANTE Pass?
The Navegante is a monthly public transport pass that allows you to travel with just one card across various transport services in the Lisbon area, including:
- Lisbon Metro
- Carris buses and trams
- Suburban trains (CP) – Sintra, Azambuja, Cascais lines, etc.
- Ferries (Transtejo/Soflusa) – e.g., to Almada, Barreiro, Seixal
- Other operators within the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML)
There are different versions of the pass (e.g., Municipal or Metropolitan), but for students, the most common is the free version valid across the entire AML.
🔄 What types of passes are available?
💶 Navegante Metropolitano - €40
Covers all public transport within the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Ideal if you live outside central Lisbon (e.g., Odivelas, Loures, Almada, Oeiras, Amadora, Barreiro) or plan to travel often beyond the city.
💶 Navegante Municipal – €30
Covers only public transport within one municipality, such as Lisbon. Perfect if you’ll be staying mostly in central Lisbon.

Young people up to the age of 23 no longer need to top up their navegante pass every month. However, to benefit from this, you must activate the Youth Free Pass!
How? The top-up can be easily done through the navegante App, at any navegante Space, or at the Customer Service Desks of the transport operators.
⚠️ Important: Misuse = Fines!
The Navegante Card is personal and non-transferable – only you can use it.
Ticket inspectors are active daily on trains, metros, buses, and ferries. They check:
- That you have your card with you
- That the card is reloaded and valid
- That the card matches the ID of the person using it
Using someone else’s card or traveling without a valid load may result in a fine of €30 to €60.
⏳ How Long Can You Use It?
- Until the end of the month you turn 24 (standard rule);
- Or until age 25 if you're in a higher education integrated program.
